Slime Mold Computing


The Hawaii Space Exploration Analog and Simulation (HISEAS) 2020

Slime molds use their senses to solve problems - finding food and avoiding harzards for example. We cultured Sclerotium to explore minimum path-finding through a 3D environment. How does biological decision making differ from digital, chemical, or physical optimizations? Is memory involved? Is sensing?
There are more questions than answer. Photographs of the slime growing over a variety of environments included below.
